▼There are some mandatory and recommended vaccinations for traveling to Colombia.
You should speak with a medical professional several weeks before you travel to find out what you need depending on your personal circumstances and travel plans.
It is also necessary to report the health status of the traveler in the Check-Mig immigration registration form. Remember that this is a mandatory step before traveling to the country.
Do I Need a COVID-19 Vaccine for Colombia
There are no COVID-19 vaccination requirements for Colombia. International visitors no longer need to present vaccination certificate to enter the country.
You do, however, need to complete a Check-Mig Form.
Yellow Fever Certificate For Colombia
Travelers from Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and Brazil or who are traveling to one of the endemic areas of yellow fever in the territory must be vaccinated against this viral disease.
The yellow fever vaccine is necessary especially if you are going to travel to the departments of La Guajira, Norte de Santander, Putumayo and the regions of the Eastern Plains, the Amazon, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the entire Atlantic Coast.
It must be administered 15 days before traveling to Colombia.
Vaccines Recommended to Enter Colombia
The Colombian government recommends having your vaccinations up to date, including those for measles and rubella.
On the other hand, worldwide health authorities such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM), recommend the following vaccines to travel to Colombia.
Typhoid vaccine
You can get two typhoid vaccines:
- Live oral typhus vaccine: offers up to 5 years of protection and is approved for use in people over 6 years of age.
- Injected typhoid vaccine: Provides protection for up to 2 years. This vaccine can be used in people 2 years of age and older.
Hepatitis A vaccine
According to the WHO, the hepatitis A vaccine is the best way to protect against the virus. Most vaccines are given in 2 doses every 6 months. Several studies indicate that vaccines offer protection for 40 years or more.
Generally, they are administered a year after birth.
Hepatitis B vaccine
The best way to protect yourself against hepatitis B is by injecting vaccines. These drugs provide lifelong protection if the respective reinforcements are made.
Rabies vaccine
The authorities recommend applying the rabies vaccine based on the traveler's itinerary and the length of time that they are going to stay in an area with a risk of rabies.
It is best to receive your first vaccination at least 28 days before your trip. Then it is recommended to receive 2 additional doses after 28 days.
In case of not being able to complete the schedule (3 vaccines) before traveling, it is better not to administer the vaccine.
Influenza vaccine
Influenza vaccines are updated each year due to constant changes in the virus that causes the condition. An annual vaccination is recommended, which is as long as the protection lasts.
Keep in mind that it takes up to 2 weeks for the biological product to develop protection after the vaccine is given. Despite having several options, the most complete vaccine against influenza is the quadrivalent.
Can They Decline My Visa If I Don't Get Vaccinated to Travel to Colombia?
The requirements to obtain the Colombian visa do not include being vaccinated against any disease. This should not be a reason for your visa to be denied.
However, as specified above, you can be prohibited from entering the country.
Check you have all the vaccines you need well ahead of your planned trip to Colombia. Health requirements are subject to change.
